Live SP Web Cam

The live SP web cam is back up and running after being taken inside for the winter (thanks, Nick at ARO).  So if you want to see what it looks like out our windows right this minute, click on the SP Web Cam link to the left.

Hi Chuck... question, where exactly is the pole with relation to the research station. Can you use the reference point of the SP Web Cam to spot it for me?

Sure can. You can't do it right now because it is stormy and there is too much blowing snow, but when the picture clears up just follow the flag line toward the station. When you get to the end you will see a yellow pyrimidal Scott Tent off to the right. The geographic south pole is almost exactly half way between the tent and the flag line. There is a US flag exactly at the Pole too, but it is difficult to see at that distance.

Actually, let me correct myself. The ice moves about 30 feet a year and the pole marker has to be moved every January 1 to its new place directly at the Pole. Since it is late in the year the actual, true South Pole (no marker there yet) is about 25 feet to the left of where the pole marker is. So it is right at the end of the flag line.
